originating in the middle ages, galoshi are also known as gumshoes,
dickersons, or overshoes, precisely because they are worn over another
shoe to keep it from getting wet. made of rubber, Russian galoshi are
worn over valenki, to keep the wool under-shoe warm and dry. indoors,
the galosha is shed to make room for its best friend -- the big woolen
sock. not only do galoshi bring a touch of style to a traditional boot,
but they also obligingly protect their valenki from the perils of dirty
city streets, while providing traction on ice and other slippery
surfaces. in freezing temperatures and in the snow, galoshi are not
worn.

each
pair of AKA valenki is unique.
because they are the work of human hands, AKA valenkis will vary in color,
height, and thickness.
but not to worry -- each shoe has been hand-picked to match its partner
by a process that, in Russia, is called the
"General's Quality Guarantee" (an idea originating from the fact that
a Russian General is unlikely to be issued a mismatched pair). every adult pair of valenki is also embroidered with the official AKA logo. |
